Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes. The Health and Education Relief Organization is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization (Tax ID: 58-X45XXXX). Contributions by U.S. citizens and companies are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
 
How much of my contribution goes to HERO programs?
Last year, 85 percent of HERO expenses supported the organization's Health and Peace programs, 9 percent supported fund-raising activities, and 6 percent supported HERO's administration and facility.
 
Where else does HERO support come from?
Last year, 47 percent of our support came from corporations (including in-kind donations), 24 percent came from individual donors, 19 percent came from foundations, 7 percent came from governments (including United States and foreign governments, as well as multilateral organizations), and 3 percent came from other revenue.
 
Where can I find in-depth information about HERO's support?
All donors who contribute $1,000 or more to Health and Education Relief Organization in a fiscal year (Sept. 1-Aug. 31) are listed in our annual report.
 
How can I be sure you are investing my support wisely?
An outside accounting firm conducts an annual audit of the Health and Education Relief Organization, which is published in our annual report. In addition, an all-volunteer board of trustees oversees the work of HERO, sets policies and procedures, and monitors the budget and expenditures.
 
How much do I have to give to make a difference?
Whether you can give $10 or $1,000, your charitable gift can make a difference in the lives of millions. Some examples:
  • As little as $20 can buy five square meters of nylon filter material that will enable Haitian families to filter their water, helping them avoid  worm disease.
  • $50 can provide a year of treatment for 125 people suffering from schistosomiasis.
  • $350 can provide one day of conflict resolution training for 25 local leaders.
  • A $1,000-$2,000 donation can eradicate worm disease from an entire village.
  • $3,000 can provide a student the opportunity to gain valuable experience and do vital work as a medical intern for one semester.
  • Your gifts, at all levels, make possible HERO's mission to Wage Peace, Fight Disease and Build Hope.

What are others ways to support HERO's work?
 
  Online using your credit card. This link will take you to a secure site where you can make a gift with a major credit card.
 
  Gifts by Mail. Please print, complete, and return our short donation form with your check. You may also make a donation in honor or in memory of a relative, friend, or colleague by completing the appropriate box on the donation form.
 
  Matching Gifts.Many employers match gifts to the Health and Education Relief Organization, sometimes doubling or tripling the good your gift does. Click here to view a list of companies that currently participate in our Matching Gift Program.
 
  Ambassadors Circle: Annual Unrestricted Giving. Members of the Ambassadors Circle provide crucial resources to HERO's most pressing needs and receive special updates, invitations, and recognition for their support.   The Peacekeepers: Monthly Donors. The Peacekeepers are donors who are committed to supporting the Health and Education Relief Organization on a monthly basis. Peacekeepers provide consistent and vital support for Waging Peace, Fighting Disease and Building Hope. Click here for more information.
 
  Gifts of Stocks/ Securities. You may be able to capture valuable tax benefits by donating appreciated stocks or other securities. More info here.
 
  Planned Gifts such as charitable annuities, charitable trusts, will provisions, and other deferred gifts advance the long-term goals of HERO while enjoying the financial and tax benefits that flow from sound investment and estate planning. Click here for more information.
 
  Honor/Memorial Gifts are a very meaningful way to recognize a loved one and to assist the Health and Education Relief Organization. Gifts in honor or memory of someone special can be made by using the mail-in donation form or online by using the comments field. A personalized letter will be sent as notification of your gift.
 
Can I give to HERO through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)?
The Health and Education Relief Organization is an approved charitable organization of the Combined Federal Campaign of Metropolitan Atlanta. Federal employees in metropolitan Atlanta who wish to contribute to HERO through the Combined Federal Campaign may use our CFC number: 6XXX.
Will I be sent a receipt for my gift?
Yes. The Health and Education Relief Organization will mail you a receipt for each contribution you make, whether you give by mail, telephone, or donate online. If you give online and prefer to receive only an e-mail receipt, please check the appropriate box on the online donation form.
 
Will my name and address be sold to other solicitors?
No. The Health and Education Relief Organization does not sell, rent, or trade the names, addresses, or e-mail addresses, of its current donors.
 
Are online gifts to HERO secure?
Yes. Online donations are handled by Blackbaud, Inc. on behalf of the Health and Education Relief Organization, and all information you provide as part of the transaction is encrypted to prevent theft or interception. A key or a closed lock displayed on your browser status bar indicates you have a secure connection when you enter the online donation page. At the bottom of the donation page, you will see symbols for VeriSign, which verifies you are visiting a valid site, and Blackbaud, Inc., which links you to the company's privacy policy and describes security measures in greater detail.

If I give, how often will I receive mail from the HERO?
The Health and Education Relief Organization is committed to communicating with donors in an efficient and effective manner. Most donors receive about eight updates per year with details of our work. Donors may request an abbreviated mail schedule (for example, "only at year's end"), and we strive to meet these requests as promptly as possible.
